Whenever I draw with oil pastel I just dive in with no sort of sketching. Although here there was planning for the blocky background and I knew for the long rectangle I would draw a flower.
Initially the girl on the top left was supposed to look like myself. She doesn't really have my facial features, but if I were to imagine myself in an alternate indie universe I would probably look like this. I colored my skin with my favorite colors, green and pink. Red though is a color mayar dislikes, but it is in her background and hair making them blend in with each other. She's afraid her hair which she is so attached to will disappear. She has to learn to let go.
The boy on the bottom left is an imaginative soulmate to my character above. He is in quite opposite colors with himself, but complementary colors with his soulmate. Blue and yellow aren't even close to his favorite colors. He is trying to feel comfortable in his own skin the best he can.
Together, with their imperfections and flaws they create a beautiful fully bloomed flower that never dies. Because their connection will never die.
Acrylic paint for background, Oil pastel on canvas.
